India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed his participation in Mumbai's upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, set to begin on January 23 at the MCA-BKC Ground.

Speaking at a press conference at the BCCI Headquarters, Rohit addressed the balancing act required for international stars navigating a packed cricketing calendar while also supporting domestic tournaments.

The announcement of India’s 2025 ICC Champions Trophy squad has sparked conversations, with the selection of Shubman Gill as the team's vice-captain becoming one of the major talking points.

Addressing the media during the squad reveal, chief selector Ajit Agarkar shed light on this significant decision.

“Gill has been vice-captain in Sri Lanka as well,” Agarkar stated. “You always want to be on the lookout for leaders. I won't look into it much but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room.”

It was after more than a two-hour delay that India captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar arrived for a scheduled press conference to announce the team for the ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy in Mumbai on Saturday.

As the two took their seats and adjusted the mics, Rohit said to Agarkar in a hushed tone that he will have to sit and discuss with the BCCI officials about the new guidelines introduced by the board about wives travelling with cricketers.

India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, and for three-match ODI series against England was announced on Saturday.

One of the major debating points was the omission of right-arm seamer Mohammed Siraj. Despite being a regular in India’s recent campaigns, Siraj has been left out of the 15-member squad, which includes Yashasvi Jaiswal earning his maiden ODI call-up.

Despite a spectacular run of form in domestic cricket, Indian batter Karun Nair on Saturday found himself out of India’s Champions Trophy squad.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, addressing the media in Mumbai, shed light on the decision.

“Averaging 750+ is simply insane,” Agarkar admitted, referencing Nair’s exceptional Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign.

As they await word from the medical team regarding the lead pacer, chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated on Saturday that Jasprit Bumrah might not be able to play in the first two ODIs against England. As a result, Harshit Rana was named as a replacement.

However, the team for the Champions Trophy, which comes after the three-match rubber against England, included the India pace spearhead.

"Bumrah has been told to off-load for five weeks after and he won't be available for the first two ODIs against England. We are waiting on his fitness and will know his status in early February from the medical team," Agarkar said during a press conference in Mumbai which he addressed alongside India captain Rohit Sharma.

Swashbuckling opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was on Saturday expectedly picked in the India squad for the ODI series against England and ICC Champions Trophy.

Jaiswal, who has been in red-hot form recently and represents India in Tests and T20Is, earned his maiden ODI call-up.

The 23-year-old has been picked in the squad as the third opener after skipper Rohit Sharma and his deputy Shubman Gill.

Jasprit Bumrah was named in India squad for the Champions Trophy next month but there is no clarity on his participation in the multi-nation tournament yet. Chairman of men's senior selection committee Ajit Agarkar informed that Harshit Rana will be with the side for the ODIs vs England as they are not expecting Bumrah to feature in at least two ODIs of the series.

It is reliably understood that Bumrah will undergo scans on February 2 and the future course of action will be decided after that.

The seamer was asked to offload for five weeks and both the medical team and management will get clarity after another round of scans in February. Both Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma continued to maintain that they are not sure about Bumrah's participation in the tournament yet and it affected the composition of the seam-bowling attack too.

Mohammed Siraj was a notable omission as the thinktank preferred Arshdeep Singh for his death bowling skills and ability to bowl the death overs. With no clarity on Bumrah yet, they wanted to keep all bases covered. The second ODI vs England is on February 9 and a substantial update on Bumrah can be expected around that time as India would need to make changes, if any, to their Champions Trophy squad by February 13.

Bumrah didn't bowl in the second innings of the fifth Test vs Australia in Sydney and the official word then was that he had a back spasm. The seamer, who was leading the side in Rohit Sharma's absence for the final game of the series, went for scans on the fourth day of the Test and while he did come out to bat on Day 5, he didn't take the field and helplessly saw India suffer the defeat.

The men's senior selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar picked the squad for both Champions Trophy and three ODIs vs England. Rohit Sharma will lead the 15-member squad and will have Shubman Gill as his deputy. Currently on rest, Jasprit Bumrah has been named in the squad but with a rider.

Agarkar said that he has been offloading for five weeks and they will have more clarity on his participation in the first week of February. The selectors have picked Harshit Rana for the ODIs vs England as they don't expect Bumrah to feature at least in the first two ODIs vs England.

The squad is on the expected lines and the management have gone ahead with just one seam-bowling all-rounder in Hardik Pandya. They have beefed up the spin department with Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav. The first three also give a lot of depth to the batting and add flexibility too.

India men's senior selection committee chaired by Ajit Agarkar will pick India's provisional squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy today in Mumbai and they are set to face a happy headache while doing the same. While top-order is more or less clear, they need to find the right pieces for the middle-order puzzle. There are plenty of players in the mix for those 3-4 positions but Shreyas Iyer remains a no-brainer for the middle-overs period.

With the right mix of caution and aggression, he has aced the 50-over game in the past and had a stellar 2023 ODI World Cup where he amassed 530 runs in 11 innings. The runs came at a healthy strike-rate and he hit two hundreds and three half-centuries during India's campaign. The right-hander had a turbulent little period where he lost out on an annual contract but bounced back in emphatic fashion during the IPL where he led KKR to the title.

There were three ordinary outings against Sri Lanka in the ODIs but he rediscovered the touch during the domestic season where he made substantial contributions, across formats, for Mumbai. 452 runs in five First Class innings were followed by 345 runs in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and 325 runs in five List A fixtures. He has the weight of runs behind him but more importantly has the game suited for the surfaces in Dubai. With spin expected to play a major role in the tournament, Iyer has what it takes to control the middle period of the game like he did during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

He has time and again reiterated that he is not fussy about batting positions and that flexibility will certainly come good. The England ODIs will definitely help coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma to finalise composition of their middle-order, and it will make a lot of sense if it revolves around Iyer.

Yes, there are plenty of right-handers in the middle-order mix at the moment but India do have some flexible left-handers in the lower-order who they can seamlessly move around as per the match situation. Those movements were on display during the three ODIs vs Sri Lanka and it could well continue in the upcoming ODI assignments.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed surprise over the BCCI's decision to enforce mandatory travel rules for players, requiring them to travel together with the team for matches and practice sessions. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra questioned the necessity of such a regulation and suggested it might have been introduced due to prior misuse.

"Players cannot travel separately with families. All players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions. I am extremely surprised by this rule. Going for practice or the match is with the team only," Chopra said. "This has been happening forever. If someone wants to practice more, they request the coach. But has someone been leaving early? Some abuse must have happened; that's why this rule is being enforced," he added.

The BCCI's decision follows a review meeting held after India's 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, attended by captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Referencing recent incidents, Chopra clarified that isolated lapses, like Yashasvi Jaiswal reportedly arriving late to a session, do not reflect a widespread issue. "I am pretty sure everyone wouldn't have been flouting the rule. Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn't reach recently, and he got punished for being late. That's a different story," he explained.

Chopra also highlighted the importance of accountability for those who might have allowed exceptions in the past. "If someone claims they don't need to travel with the team because they're staying elsewhere or it's their city, then whoever permitted this should be called out," he asserted.

India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar is now on a sticky wicket as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has added Sitanshu Kotak to the support staff as a batting coach. The Indian cricket board didn't have a "batting coach" under head coach Gautam Gambhir but Nayar is understood to have been discharging those duties during the team's recent assignments.

During the BCCI review meeting, the role of the support staff was discussed and it's understood that coach Gambhir had asked for a specialist batting coach during a discussion with the top brass.

During the net sessions in Australia, Nayar was largely working with the players not in the Playing XI and had extended batting sessions with the lower-order and bowlers. In Melbourne, Nayar worked extensively on Mohammed Siraj's batting and had a long session with Shubman Gill, who wasn't in the XI, during the Lunch break. Even in Sydney, he remained on side-arm duties during the team's only practice session before the New Year Test.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar questioned the role of support staff when India lost the series 3-1, and clearly wasn't pleased with the way batters had performed.

“Aapke coaching staff kya kar rahe the? (What was your coaching staff doing in Australia?) Your bowling coach and your batting coach… your batting coach, in particular, against New Zealand when we were bowled for 46, and the way we were defeated in the remaining matches. Batting main koi dum nahi tha (There was no punch in the batting). Here also our batting was not strong enough, so questions should be asked what have you guys done? Why can’t we see any improvement?” questioned Gavaskar in a chat with the broadcaster.

It is learnt that the BCCI top brass too felt the need for a batting specialist and Kotak's addition is seen as an attempt to fix those issues. The former Saurashtra cricketer has been part of the India A and National Cricket Academy (NCA) set-ups for a very long time and has worked with a lot of young players during the A tours.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels Rohit Sharma will have autonomy to decide when he retires from international cricket but acknowledged that the selectors may have a say in the matter too.

India's recent 3-1 Test series loss in Australia saw Rohit struggling with the bat, scoring only 31 runs in five innings.

His decision to sit out of the Sydney Test further fueled speculations about his international future, especially in the longest format.

"I believe that in Indian cricket, Tendulkar decided his future, and Rohit Sharma will decide his future. Retirement is a personal decision—how long you want to play or how much more you want to contribute is up to the player. Ultimately, though, it’s also up to the selectors—in this case, Mr. Ajit Agarkar and his team," said Manjrekar on an episode of 'Deep Point' podcast by Star Sports.

Manjrekar also suggested that Virat Kohli should consider playing a season of County cricket in England to improve his Test game ahead of the five-match series in June. He cited Cheteshwar Pujara's example, who benefitted from the the experience of playing in Country cricket.

Although the County season clashes with the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kohli could still play red-ball cricket in England, joining the India 'A' squad for the shadow series before the main Test series.

Kohli had a disappointing tour of Australia, where he was often dismissed while chasing deliveries outside the off-stump.

“Kohli needs to play a lot of red-ball cricket. The first Test in England is in June, while the County Championship begins in April. He could join a County team, like Pujara did, and gain valuable match practice. India can then evaluate his performances in the initial Test matches.”

“If there are positive signs, he can continue. But the last thing you want is Kohli going there and struggling, as we’ve seen before. That wouldn’t be good for Indian cricket. Playing County cricket could be a very sensible move for him,” he added.

Suspense around Virat Kohli's participation in Delhi's upcoming Ranji Trophy match versus Saurashtra from January 23 continues but it's reliably learnt that the India batter had a neck sprain and even took an injection to help against it. The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), however, continue to maintain that they are yet to get an update.

"Virat Kohli had a neck sprain and even took an injection for the same. There is a possibility of him skipping the first of the two Ranji Trophy games left and a clear picture could come if the DDCA selectors are given an update," said a well-placed source.

As of now, Kohli joining the Delhi squad at some stage can't be ruled out and it will not be a surprise if he trains with the side in Rajkot before the fixture gets underway against Saurashtra. The Delhi squad is scheduled to leave on January 20 and will have two training sessions before the match begins.

A senior DDCA official said Kohli's name will most likely be added to the squad with "subject to availability" next to it. The situation, however, could change if they get a clear picture before the meeting this afternoon (January 17) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The probables of the squad have a net session before the men's senior selection committee and coach Sarandeep Singh meet to pick the side.

Rishabh Pant has already confirmed his availability for the game against Saurashtra and some DDCA officials are optimistic on his participation even in the last game versus Railways at home.
